Technology
- Modem/Router
- Device composed, in a single unit, of an ADSL modem and a router allowing for the sharing of a high-speed Internet connection between several computers. A modem/router may be either "wired" (sharing only with computers connected via a cable) or WiFi (can also share with computers connected wirelessly via WiFi).
- Router
- Device allowing for the sharing of a high-speed Internet connection (via an ADSL or cable modem external to the router) between several computers. A router may be either "wired" (sharing only with computers connected via a cable) or WiFi (can also share with computers connected wirelessly via WiFi)).
- WiFi
- Technology allowing users to connect a variety of devices in a network, such as computers, game consoles, PDAs... without any wires. The main use is wireless sharing of a home high-speed Internet connection.
- WEP
- Security protocol for wireless networks using encryption based on a fixed 64-bit or 128-bit key being used only once, at the beginning of the decryption phase. To decrypt a transmission, each client on the wireless network must use the same 64-bit or 128-bit key. WEP is part of the 802.11 standard, with the goal of ensuring authentication (access is only authorized for those who know the WEP key) and confidentiality (encryption). A WEP key is composed of numbers 0 to 9 and letters A to F (example: A123BCD45E).
- WPA
- High level of security, specially designed for environments such as a small business or the home, using a pre-shared key.
- WPA2
- Next-generation very high level of security, specially designed for environments such as a small business or the home, using a pre-shared key.
- Internet box
- ADSL modem supplied by a high-speed Internet service provider to its clients.
- MAC address
- Unique identifier for each network device in the world.
- MAC filtering
- Process allowing the user to authorize or refuse access to a WiFi network based on a device's MAC address.
- 802.11b
- Earlier generation WiFi standard allowing for data rates of up to 11Mbps using the 2.4GHz frequency band.
- 802.11g
- WiFi standard allowing for data rates of up to 54Mbps using the 2.4GHz frequency band.
- Mbps
- Unit of measurement of data rates in an Ethernet or WiFi network.
- Firewall
- Protection mechanism against malicious attacks via the Internet.
- SPI / NAT
- Two complementary mechanisms, allowing on the one hand for the analysis of data packets arriving via the Internet, and on the other hand for the masking of computers on a local area network with respect to the Internet.
- DHCP
- Protocol managing the allocation of IP addresses to computers in the same network (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).
- ESSID
- Identifier from 8 to 32 characters, often abbreviated as SSID, serving as a unique name for a WiFi network shared by clients and the access point (Service Set Identifier).
- PPPoA
- Protocol allowing for connection to the Internet of computers connected in an ATM Network while at the same time authenticating the user (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM).
- PPPoE
- Protocol allowing for connection to the Internet of computers connected in an Ethernet network via a high-speed modem (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet).
