Power Line Communication

Power Line Communication technology allows users to connect to the Internet via their home’s existing electrical network (using small, dedicated adapters plugged into electrical outlets). This technology consists of separating out low-frequency (alternating current) signals from high-frequency waves, on which digital data is transmitted: thanks to this superposition, the functioning of electrical equipment is undisturbed. Currently, data rates attained via Power Line Communication range from 14 Mbit/s to 200 Mbit/s. Power Line Communication technology is used mainly in private electrical networks, where it is employed as an alternative to traditional network cabling and WiFi (since it allows for the circumvention of various obstacles, including thick walls). Standards have been put in place by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, and all hardware certified by the organization is guaranteed interoperable.
